Over the last few weeks, ending on Feb. 28, Granny’s Attic held a contest to see how creative the elementary school kids in the northern part of the county could be.

Granny’s Attic is an antiques/repurposed goods/other home décor business based in Panaca, and the competition was open to any elementary school student in Caliente, Pioche, and Panaca.

The kids were issued coloring pages depicting an elderly granny sitting in a rocking chair (hence the “Granny’s Attic Rocks!”  tagline) with the admonition to “be creative!” with what they drew, and the winners from each school were judged based off of originality and creativity.

Whether or not they won, every student that participated will have their artwork displayed at the Granny’s Attic section of Jolly’s Pharmacy, and participants’ parents will receive a 10 percent discount on all Granny’s Attic merchandise. While there were more than 30 different drawings entered into the contest, only seven pictures were selected as the best of the best, with one picture
winning overall. All winners received a bar of candy, a certificate recognizing their achievement, and had their picture taken with Carolyn Harr, owner of Granny’s Attic.

Panaca Elementary’s winners were a three-way tie: Rylee Heiselbetz, Ella Beckstrand and Tatelyn Perkins. Caliente Elementary winners were Jazmin Gonzalez and Brooke McVay. Pioche Elementary winners were Ayden Anthony and Jenna Faehling, with Jenna winning best overall picture.

“It was just really cute, the things she added to the picture,” Harr said referring to Jenna’s entry. Harr also wanted to thank the faculty of the schools for helping with the activity, and although this is the first time this event has been held, she hopes that it will become a common occurrence in the years to come.
