CARSON CITY – The Nevada State Board of Education announced its timeline for providing Gov. Steve Sisolak three candidates for the Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction position.

“Ensuring that the Governor has highly qualified candidates for his selection to run the Nevada Department of Education is one of the most important duties we have as a board,” said Elaine Wynn, Board President. “Our board has been in contact with Governor Sisolak and we are working diligently to ensure that we move forward in a thoughtful and timely fashion.”

The Board will meet on February 15 at 1:30 p.m. at its Nevada Department of Education offices in Carson City and Las Vegas to receive public input on the desired job skills for the position and to appoint a search committee. An updated job description will also be posted at the conclusion of the meeting. Resumes will be accepted beginning Feb. 15 through March 1. The official meeting posting can be found at 2019 Nevada State Board of Education Meeting Materials. Any other questions regarding this position should be directed to the Nevada Department of Education’s Agency Human Resources Office at AgencyHR@admin.nv.gov.

On March 5, the search committee will meet to select four to six candidates who will be invited to a public interview with the entire State Board of Education at its regular meeting on March 12. It is anticipated that at the March 12th meeting, the Board will then formally choose three candidates to forward to Governor Sisolak.

Once appointed, the Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction serves at the pleasure of the Governor. This position directs the Nevada Department of Education in accordance with the policies created by the Nevada State Board of Education.

Dr. Steve Canavero resigned his post as State Superintendent after three years in the position, effective Feb. 6. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Moore has agreed to serve as acting State Superintendent until a permanent selection is made by the Governor.
