CARSON CITY – The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is recruiting volunteers with a love of history and learning to participate in a multi-day “New Tour Guide Training” program.

Jan Loverin, curator at the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russell Clothing Textile Center, gives a behind-the-scenes tour. Loverin will be among the curators training new volunteers at the museum. Guy Clifton/TravelNevada

The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sept. 10, 11, 17 and 18, and is open to both new and returning volunteers. The training program will introduce new volunteers to the museum, while allowing existing volunteers to sharpen their knowledge of the museum.

The program includes presentations by all of the museum’s curators and will also include training in new interpretive techniques that will mainly focus on the Historic Mint Building, which will be 150 years old in 2020.

“It is so much fun learning about Nevada and meeting nice people from all over the world,” said volunteer Jan Davis. “And the other volunteers are great.”

The Nevada State Museum, founded inside the former U.S. Branch Mint in 1942, was recently voted the best museum in rural Nevada by the readers of Nevada Magazine. It’s exhibits include both the cultural and natural history of Nevada.

The training is free. Space is limited, so prospective volunteers should contact the Nevada State Museum Education Department at nsmeducatio@nevadaculture.org or (775)687-4810 ext 237. New volunteers will have to complete a new volunteer application. For more information check http://nvculture.org/nevadastatemuseumcarsoncity/volunteer-opportunities/.
