Reno – U.S. Senator Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) on Tuesday, March 27, toured the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno. Highlights of her tour included visiting the University’s School of Medicine, the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center and the Innevation Center. Senator CortezMasto also hosted a roundtable with current university students where participants discussed issues of diversity, inclusion and affordability in higher education.
“The University of Nevada, Reno has a proud history of training bright graduates. As a proud alumnae, I continue to celebrate the University of Nevada’s proud, nearly 150 year legacy of educating and training self-reliant miners and ranchers, committed public servants, brilliant scientists and engineers, leading journalists, doctors, Basque studies enthusiasts, and scholars. I am excited to see the University continuing to grow, thrive and contribute to our community while providing more students with a world class education. From the medical school, which has graduated over 1,800 talented physicians who are leading the way to better health for Nevada, to the new Innevation Center, which is bringing together students, faculty and community entrepreneurs to help empower the next generation of economic leaders, I am thrilled to see my alma mater providing so many diverse and fulfilling educational opportunities.
“The students I met with today embodied the ideals that the University also taught me; excellence, integrity, inclusiveness, and collaboration. These thoughtful men and women addressed important topics of diversity and respect. And emphasized that our country must continue to invest in the future of men and women across the country, by ensuring all students can access an affordable education. I am pleased to have fought to fund these critical college accessibility programs in the recent Omnibus spending bill which increases the average Pell Grant Award and will add an additional $140 million in funding to the Federal Work Study program.
