YERINGTON – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley is once again providing food for children ages 0 to 18 at all of its locations for the summer. Meals meet federal nutrition requirements, will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. There will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
Free breakfast is provided Monday through Friday, June 18 through Aug. 24, from 8-9 a.m. and lunch is offered from 12-1 p.m., at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley Clubhouse, 124 N. Main Street, Yerington; and its satellite locations: Dayton Elementary School, 285 Dayton Valley Road, Dayton; and Sutro Elementary School, 190 Dayton Village Parkway, Dayton and in Silver Springs at 3900 Spruce Ave.
Free breakfast is provided Monday through Friday, June 4 through Aug. 10, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunch is offered from 12-1 p.m., at the Club’s Hawthorne location at 525 W. 9th Street.
Travis Crowder, chief professional officer for the Club, said the program serves as many as 500 meals a day across the Club’s sites.
“The Food Program is crucial to helping provide food and eliminate hunger for kids in our rural communities,” he said. “The number of meals we serve is increasing every year.”
Sibling Club members who participate in the program, Dahlia C., 8, and Chris C., 6, said the Club’s food programs give them more healthy options, including vegetables and fresh fruit, and sometimes sweet potato fries.
“I love the food program because I like to play with my friends and eat at the same time,” Dahlia C. said. “I like cooking as well, and sometimes I can be a kitchen helper and help serve meals and watch how to cook. My favorite food at the Club is the tater tot casserole, without the Club I would be eating a lot of junk food.”
Chris C. said he likes eating at the Club because the food gives him energy.
“Right after we eat we always play outside so I can use that energy to play,” he said. “I would be starving without eating at the Club so I’m very happy we can eat here. I am full throughout the entire day because of the food they have here.”
The Nevada Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Program provides support to the Club’s year-round food program. For more information about the food program and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley visit bgcmasonvalley.org or call 775-463-2334.
